The famous image shows Mike Tyson, the legendary boxing champion, wearing a sweatshirt that reads “PROPERTY OF XXL ALLAH.” This image is from the mid-1990s, a period during which Tyson was exploring his spiritual and personal identity.
In 1992, Tyson was convicted and sentenced to prison, serving about three years of a six-year sentence. During his time in prison, Tyson converted to Islam. The crewneck symbolizes a phase in his life when he openly expressed his faith following his release. It made its famous debut at the weigh-in against Mathis on December 14, 1995, at the Marriott Hotel in Philadelphia. The phrase “PROPERTY OF ALLAH” reflects Tyson’s devotion to his newfound Islamic beliefs.
Tyson won against Mathis Jr. on Dec. 16, 1995 by knockout in the third round.
The “XXL” label seen on vintage sweaters and athletic gear is a nod to traditional sports culture and signifies the size “Extra, Extra Large.” However, at SalafiThreads, we have put a small twist on it, and replaced that with "ONE GOD" so that the apparel reads better for dawah purposes.
